Using the Notecard Feature of the Sketchbook in EQ5         Back to EQ TipsBack to Notions
Every time you create or resize a quilt or quilt block, EQ5 creates a blank notecard for it. You can even have a different notecard for each coloring of a block by changing the Preferences to ensure that each coloring has its own block. (EQ5 normally saves 10 colorings on each block drawing.) To do this: Click File/Preferences/General tab. Change the "Maximum number of colorings on a block" to 1. You will now get a new block and notecard for each coloring.  Use this notecard to document:
  • Your name, city and state, E-mail address and date
  • What inspired this block (or quilt)
  • The purpose of the quilt or block and/or the reason it was made
  • Any unusual construction details, such as "must be paper pieced in
three sections" or "block is a rectangle".
  • Any other comments

If you have created a new block, you should name it on the name line of the notecard. That way, EQ5's search feature will be able to find it when you do a block name search, provided the block has been saved in My Library. Blocks in projects are not searched. The search feature also checks any program you have linked to EQ, such as Blockbase and SewPrecise. (Don't forget Blockbase blocks have their ID number on the name line, so they won't be found in a name search.)

The notecards of blocks filed in the Libraries are permanent. If you would like to make changes to the notecard of a block filed in a Library, you will need to create a new copy of the block, make the changes, save, then file it again. You can remove the previous version of the block with its notecard and copy the new version to the Library Style at the same time.

Always remember to click the save something in the Sketchbook button after making changes to the notecard. Save the project file after you exit the Sketchbook.

Are you using having notecard problems while using XP?  Here is a question and answer from our "Using EQ with XP" page.

Sometimes EQ crashes when I am coloring a block in Easy Draw using XP. How can I avoid this?

Service Pack 1 available from Microsoft corrects this problem. To find it, click on the Windows Update button on your Start menu. Be aware that if you upgrade using this service pak, you will not be able to use the notecard.

If you would prefer not to update XP at this time, or if you have already upgraded and want to use the notecard, try this fix:

On the Windows Desktop, right-click on the EQ5 icon. Click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Click to check the "Run this program..." box. Click the down arrow beside it to drop down choices and choose Win 98/ME. Click Apply. Click OK.
